small charcoal basket

After struggling with coals spread too thinly for my 6 hour rib cook, Don Reed suggested a smaller basket and sent me here, to see this idea - his basket is shown some ways down the linked page.

Well, I took that pic to the local welding shop and asked them to make something like it for me. They came up with just the ticket and I put this little basket through its paces on July 4 doing my Holy Grail chicken cook. Here it is "after".

I fully lit one chimney of Stubbs, and tipped them into this basket. It did a fantastic job of keeping the coals tight. The temp in my WSM shot straight up to 250-300 range and sat exactly where I wanted it. Smoke flowed fast and blue, seemed like there was more air movement inside the WSM than usual. I cooked without a pan that day, too, so that probably helped.

Here's another shot of the basket, this time inside the WSM ring, for size comparison.

I paid quite a bit for the basket ($120) but I can see I'll get heaps of use from it.

The one thing I'm not sure about is whether I should paint it using some kind of heat resistant paint.

What can I tell you, Corey... here's where the girl-viewpoint comes in handy.

The guy in the shop said: We can do the basket with no holes for $40. But if you want those holes made, that's gonna run $120.

I said to myself: $120... that's less than I spend on a purse. What do I want more - coal basket or new purse?

No contest.

Looks great. My first couple of cooks with the WSM used less than a chimney each time. Worked fine, but the charcoal sure looked lonely spread around that big 'ol ring

I wonder how a 22.5" with a small basket like this would compare to an 18.5" for fuel consumption on small cooks in warm weather ?

Another suggestion: Go to Amazon and buy the Weber "charcoal rails" for the 18.5 kettle -- about $10 - $20 (depending on the day

Mount them inside the standard charcoal ring and load the charcoal BETWEEN the rails.

I have these, and they will restrict the charcoal to a 7 - 8" band inside the charcoal ring. The band will be wider on 22" WSM, but still effective or you can get the Weber charcoal baskets for the 22 kettle and put them side by side in the ring.

Net savings about $100. (Sorry, Jennifer. I don't buy purses, but I AM careful with my dollars!)

OBTW, I wouldn't bother painting that box, but it's your choice. Just keep it out of the weather.

Jennifer, in the future maybe ask someone near you that's on this board for help with a mod. I'm sure there must be some Colorado members close to you.

a 4x4 piece of Expanded Metal at $15 could make several of these smaller rings ... which would have left some cash leftover for a new purse :>

Yes that was way to mutch paid! It looks great...And i bet it works great. But next time ask on this board. I could have that made for you for free and the shiping costs wouldent be 40$ from Sweden to your place.

Dont wanna make you feel bad about this....But next time a member will help you out!

I'm sorry to hear you had to pay for it as well. I never really thought anyone would do the mod the way I did and would have gone with the expanded metal. But it does look good and it will probably out last expanded metal. I am glad it works well for you, I really like mine.

Okay, guys... I promise next time I'll ask, so I can buy the new purse, too.

I really wanted the basket in time for my chicken cook on July 4 and I looked at the excellent expanded metal idea, but I had no idea how I would get it to hold together...cut it.. etc. My honey thought the heavier box would be safer for me to use (not sure why, exactly), and wasn't exactly volunteering to help me make one.

I'm very happy with my little basket, even if it means I have to wait a while on buying other bells and whistles.

Thank you, Daniel, for your offer... be careful, I might ask you to make something else!

I think it looks very nice, and much better than expanded metal. I can see why they charged $120 - they drilled all those holes, that would take a while. It will last forever, so $120 spread over 10+ years really isn't too bad.
