Shout Out from the Deep South

Howdy folks. I finally picked up a Weber gas grill, the one that's I've wanted for quite a while. In 2015, I got a Char Broil from Wal Mart. We got it to see if we'd like grilling. We'd never had a gas grill before and we didn't really use the charcoal grill often. Turns out, we love grilling outside and, some months, we'd grill every weekend. The Char Broil grill still works, but it was starting to show its age. After 7 years, random bolts would appear under it after a cleaning session and there there's some noticeable corrosion in the cross supports for the burners. I don't get the impression that those types of grills are designed to last that long, even though we've taken great care of it. So, I decided it was time for an upgrade.

I had been reading on another board I'm on about people who were getting some amazing clearance deals on gas grill at the end of the season. That made me curious. I went to Lowes and Wal Mart one weekend at the end of August. There weren't any real sales since grilling season lasts well into the Fall here with football tailgating. So I waited a bit longer.

A couple of weeks ago I tried again and went to Lowes. There were a lot of grill outside that were in various states of markdown. There were a lot of Weber Spirit grills, the smaller ones mostly, out and about. I really didn't want to go smaller than I already had. And the prices weren't all that, anyway. I kept looking outside and then I saw the one I wanted. There was a Weber Genesis E-435 next to a huge collection of rusted Char Broils. It retailed for $1,650 based on the attached tag. This one looked like it had been outside for a while. It was new, but it was pretty dusty. It had a few dings and scratches, although nothing really that noticeable. It had been marked down to $830. That was out of my budget. I decided to see if the manager would go lower. He immediately dropped the price to $700 and told me that was as low as he could go. That model wholesales for about $1k, and he said he was already losing money on the sale at $700.

We haggled some more and I tried various Jedi mind tricks on him. Finally, he agreed to let me have the grill for $640. It was still a bit out of my budget, but I really wanted that grill. My will broke and we shook on the deal. Out the door, it was $694. I took it home, removed the grill and accessories, and gave it a good bath to get all of that dust and grime off of it. It cleaned up like a new penny. We grilled on it that night. The grill is missing the small, curved-door magnets that hold the door in place, but was, otherwise, complete. One of the burners had been bumped out of place and I was able to snap it back in. However, the igniter for the burner had also been bumped out of place. I was able to also move it over and snap it back into position. It works fine now.

I've never bought a Weber before, but it certainly feels like I was able to get a good deal on it. It's a really nice grill, as you can imagine. I've enjoyed tinkering with it so far. In fact, I'm off in a bit to go pick up some items to toss on it for the LSU game today.

I'm glad to find this site. I'm looking forward to years of grilling with my new Weber.

Hi Paul, WELCOME!!!

Sounds like you will fit in real well with the rest of the gang here. ;)

Can I take you car shopping to do my negotiating? Welcome to the forum. You’ll find lots of ideas and good resources here.

And since your grill is new, Weber will warranty any issues or broken pieces you have.

Thanks, y'all! I was able to get some good grilling in yesterday. The igniter button seemed to get stuck. It kept clicking after I stopped pressing it. I took the battery out and massaged the button a bit. That seemed to get it unstuck. Not sure how that happened. The grill worked great, though.

Nice haggling! Enjoy that nice Weber grill, for many years.

Welcome! How was the cook?
It went well, thanks! I'm still having some issues trying to control the temperature. Typically, when I cook brisket, I'll leave it on the pit for about 12 hours at around 200F. With two burners at minimum power, it won't go below about 300F. I need to experiment with one burner and see what that does. We did a stuffed pork loin, some NY strip steaks, bacon wrapped chicken, and a couple of packs of bacon. The only issue I had was the igniter that kept clicking even though I wasn't pressing the button. I think it was just stuck for a bit. I haven't done burgers on it yet but that's coming. I love the removable underside tray. It's going to make cleaning a lot easier, unlike the Char Broil.

Thanks! I figured that was as low as I was going to possibly get the manager to go. A guy from one of my other boards was able to haggle a deal for about $500, but it was for the E/S-335 which is the 3-burner model if I'm not mistake. It was also a clearance deal. I really wanted a 4-burner Genesis model. The Spirits looked nice, but the ones I saw were a lot smaller. Looked perfect for hauling to the tailgate, though.
