Should I get a Weber Gas Go Anywhere?

Hello Everyone - it's me, Laura. I am thinking lately about buying myself a gas WGA. I already have a Smokey Joe, 22.5 OTG and a charcoal WGA. I am mainly a hardwood/lump girl but want to experiment with gas for those nights when I need to work and want to have a quick dinner grilled beforehand. I have the cast iron grates for my charcoal WGA, and so thought I'd get the gas WGA so I can use them on that too.

I barely plan to use it (give me my fiyaaahhhh!!!), and my situation is such that I would need to bring the grill back in when I'm done. So I'm not interested in a big standing gas grill or spending a ton of money.

What do you guys think? WGA gas for light occasional use? Let me know! Thank you!

Thank you -

Laura

I bought a GGA for those times we're camping and there are fire restrictions regarding charcoal use in the forests. I haven't used it for a quick after work cook because I work a 12 hour shift, 3 days straight and I'm too darn tired to grill when I get home. The 4 days off in a row provide me with plenty of opportunity to fire up the charcoal, and on work nights my dear wife has dinner ready when I get home from work.

The GGA is Weber's most affordable portable grill, well built and compact. I think it would be a great choice for your intent!

I have one that I got in great condition off craigslist for $15. I think its a pretty good little grill. I like how compact and easy to carry it is. I'd like mine even more if it had cray court CI grates.

With that said, I also have a Q120 which I absolutely love. You can get them used for a good price if you look long enough. I recently saw a used q100 on my local craigslist being sold for $40. They are great grills but do take up a bit more room than a Go Anywhere and are a bit more difficult to cary. So I think a Q is also worth considering for your desired use.

Thanks Everyone - that Q looks sweet, Michael. I think with me having the cast iron grates for the charcoal GA, and also really not planning on using it very much, I'm going to get the Gas GA. If I find I love that, and I want to upgrade, I'll look at the Q's down the line and start sharking for one on Craiglist. I know many people who have them and love them.

I always check Craigslist in my area, because I can't help myself. I haven't seen a Gas GA, just the bigger guys. I am going to go ahead and get the last one at OSH (they're holding it for me) and then I get to play with it starting tonight.

I'm thinking salmon and vegetables for my first cook!

Thanks again everyone - new fun toy coming up!!!

I used to have one of the older ones which had Lava Rocks and was kind of a pain to use on a windy day. I like the new design with the flavorizer bar and dark grey handles. I might buy one also to use for lunch as I work outside.

I got it! I put it together last night and will use it tonight. I'm sooooo excited! It does have the snazzy new dark handles.

Mike, you are right, you can never have too many grills! :)

I'm going to post another thread asking for gas grilling advice - I've never done it. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it and if anyone has any advice for an experienced charcoal griller but newbie gas griller, let me know! Thank you!

Laura

I used it, it got really hot on high, actually. I grilled my salmon and vegetables and it was comparable (although not quite as good) as charcoal grilling. But definitely comparable! I was very pleased and surprised. I doubt I'll do a steak on it (although today I'm going to try hamburgers and chicken) but I am very happy with my Gas Go Anywhere - more than surpassed what I thought it'd do.

Thanks all!

Laura

i found it to be a servicable grill. i have six of them with four being servicable. first off you need to replace all the hardware with ss stuff as the original hardware will rust easily. also be very carefull about turning the knob. it has thin plastic parts inside that can break easily. the burner setup has one flaw, it won't burn well or even go out in a small breeze. i made a baffle for mine that seems to work ok but i'm still messing around with that. the last thing is that you will find that it burns hotter on the side furthest away from the vlave, no real biggy, just know this and rotate the food. also the flavorizer bar/sheetmetal plate likes to rust so keep it clean and oiled as its not cheap.

Thanks, George! I'll go google how to clean the flavorizer bar/plate but if you have any tips you feel like sharing, let me know. I'm a hardwood briquette/lump kind of girl, that's where I'm saavy.

just wire off the crud and spray it with pam. i use a ss wire brush or ss wool pad. then spray or just rub pam on. it will smoke a little when you start the burner but no biggy.
course if you are going to use it in a day or two then no need.

Thanks George - I just went out and cleaned and oiled it now. I don't use it very often because I am grilling with hardwood/charcoal so much. That's good to know, I really appreciate it!

Laura

Yes I do! That was the first grill I bought when I thought I'd try out this grilling thing a couple years ago. I love my little charcoal GA.

Laura

Yes, I checked out those pictures before I joined. I love it! The GA was my main grill for a very long time, and this year a friend gave me a Smokey Joe so I've been having tons of fun playing with that one too (when I'm not pulling out the 22.5 for bigger cooks and BBQ).

Funny, I just came across this thread. I did the exact opposite. Most if not all of my grilling life I have used gas grills. Even had a crappy gas smoker. Then I got a WSM and came across this site. So many great cooks on here, I quickly became addicted to charcoal. About a month later I found a second WSM on CL and bought it (why I dont know). Today I picked up a smokey joe and a 22 OT silver on CL for cheap.

My poor old gas grill will probably never get used again.
