SCA before GrillGrate

I have searched the forum and came across a lot of discussions about GrillGrates.

However i was wondering in comp style cooking what was used before them.
Was it just the normal SS grills on a weber or similar and the steak was turned to create the searing pattern?

Also seeing a lot of cooks using a grill weight of 2lbs, is that really enough? I tried that over the weekend
and could not get the proper pattern with a heavier weight.

Pit temp was 500f and super hot grill
 
When the wife & I took the SCA's judging class in October of 2017, Brett was already pushing GrillGrates.
 
So basically to be competitive you need to have a GrillGrate or similar.

Whenever you google the prefect sear or sear pattern, you always getting someone pushing a product etc. No one going oldschool as to what the OEM grates can do

These where attempted over the weekend. no grill marks but man oh man. It had the perfect crust and lots of flavour!
