Saving old Webers one Genesis at a time

Hi everyone - after lurking for a while, finally taking the plunge and officially joining the crowd. Found this forum last year after I decided to resurrect my 20 year old General Silver B. It sat idle while I explored the joys of Kamado Joe smoking and more recently Blackstone griddles. It was nice to rediscover the joys of cooking steaks quickly.

My old Weber sat uncovered on the patio for 20 years. Squirrels had taken to gnawing on the plastic hand and knobs, burners while not completely rusted out needed replacement. And the cart was showing signs of rust. Disassembled everything, scrubbed clean, replaced what needed replacing, painted the cart and the fire box and almost a year later still working perfectly. The black lid shows signs of fading, but actually looks better in person than the pics.

Last week I came across an original Genesis L1 in red at a thrift store. 40 years old. It called out needing to be saved. $30 later it came home with me. Red and black. It will be a gift to my son at UGA. It seems remarkably intact. Surprisingly little rust on the cart itself. Burners are shot. Has 12 of the 13 flavor bars. The enamel lid is dirty but I think it just needs good cleaning to let that red pop. I'm hoping the manifold is still good. I think it's missing a drop down side table on the left, but probably won't worry about that. It also came with an extra wire rack that I think is the condiment holder and fits on the right side end of the cart. But I need to find some more pics for reference. Am really excited about this one and hope it last another 40 years.

Welcome Michael! Your Genesis 1 is a very early model and didn't have a flip up table so it doesn't look like anything is missing. The other wire rack you mentioned does go to the right of the control panel in-between the frame extensions. It seems to be in excellent condition for a grill that may have been made in 1985. Good luck, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

That's a very nice looking early Genesis 1! Here's a picture of my early Genesis 2 that I have in line for restoration and one of the date stamps which can be found inside the lid end caps and on the bottom front of the cook box. Also a picture of the brochure from that time period.
