Sapele slat work done! Just need to seal them

All 24 sapele slats are cut, sanded, drilled and installed on z bars. Installed handle as well. I just have to take them off and seal everything with an outdoor sealant

I hate to see it when a guy goes to all the trouble to make new wood and then ruins the effort by not getting the spacing right. I'm glad we caught it in time.

what did you use for spacing i would like to know

I just drilled and screwed in the end slats then used my eyes to see the spacing. I’m sure they aren’t perfect but they came out good

What works for me is to install the two end slats first, using another table as a guide for their location.Then find the midpoint and put in the two middle slats on each side of the midpoint with a gap about the same as seen in the other table. Then if you mount the remaining two slats in the middle of each gap, you’re done. Pretty crude, I know……

I think I have ended up doing it a different way every time. Only the results matter.

I cut my slats to allow for 1/4" space between them. I space them out with plastic horseshoe shims. I end up adding a piece of paper to each shim which adds about 1/32" with my shims to get equal spacing. Then I clamp them and drill pilot holes before screwing them in place.
