Salvaging a stump for wood chunks

Any opinions on using old tree stumps as a source of smoker wood?

My father in law has hickory stump that was cut off about a foot above ground. The tree itself was cut down about 3 years ago.

It seems like a good source for seasoned wood...but I've been wrong before

It should be good, I'm pretty sure the roots still grow after a tree is felled so it seems like the heartwood would still have something left.
Just a heads up, but did the FIL have male dogs running around for the last 3 years?
