Rusted charcoal grate.

Hi everyone,
I didn't drop my grate in the lake, but while redoing my deck I left the smoker around the side of the house. After a few rain storms it filled with water. ( out of site, out of mind. ) The charcoal grate was very rusty. After wiping it down it looks pretty good. A little rust where I can't get to it.
Is a little rust a danger to the food?

My charcoal grate has been outside and in my WSM for 6 years now. It's been rusty pretty much from day one. I never worry about the charcoal grate, food grates are different. When they get rusted I toss them. I've been keeping the cooking grates inside and starting the 4th year with the replacement top grate, zero rust on it.

Thanks fella's,
I thought it was ok, just needed some reassurance. I got a wire wheel after work. I'll give it a try when the little one goes to sleep.

Thanks again,
Jason

gotta laugh at myself. first i gotta learn to read. the comprehend what i read. the coal grate can be rusty. no biggy. i assumed

that we were talking about the cooking grate.

my cooking grates are always rusty, i'm very lazy after I cook. Some oil, high heat, some brushing and off I roll ...

Is rust even toxic? I don't know, but if it didn't come off with the furious brushing why would it come off on the food???

In the future, to keep water out just flip the midsection. Instead of running in, rain water will run over the sides. Thats all I ever do.
