Repaired my old Genesis today

Some may know back in fall of 92 we bought a Genesis 2 red head. Had it for years. In 2017 when my then new son in law and my daughter bought their house I gifted them my old Genesis 2 (by then converted to a 3) with addition of a side burner. When they had the house re-roofed the roofers crushed the grill with a piece of equipment. Well thanks to one of our generous members (Gerry Schaeffer) having an extra frame, (an old cross way one), and I installed all the pieces onto the "new" frame. Well recently the grease tray rails of the original now 33 yo fire box gave way and the grease tray fell down. So, I'd ended up giving the SIL the firebox from my last brown top Genesis who's frame was so rotted away I had literally nothing left to work with. So, basically scrapped it out.
So today we did a firebox swap on my old original (though now the only things original is the lid and the manifold :D )
But it's the sentiment I guess. Sorry no photos but the old grill was back up and operational within an hour

Larry I'm happy to hear that your grill that you bought new and used and loved for many years has been given another chance to do what it does best hopefully for a very long time to come. I think it's so cool to keep that grill in the family.

I actually bought it brand new from a place called Kay's Merchandise (think Service Merchandise for anyone from Chicago area). It was a closeout floor model because the X000 models were out and being stocked in the store. IIRC I paid $450 for it

Well I will say it was REALLY tough. I found myself then in the same boat early 20 somethings wail about online about not being able to afford to move from mom and dad's. Same was true in my case. And I can say that even when I went on to "Journeyman" and $3.25 hr no better LOL. Anyway I didn't want to hijack my own thread so I'll stop there :D But, end with explaining there was also no "help" or program to help you buy all the tools needed. So, your life belonged to the Snap On and Matco guys

I’m glad that old frame is still getting used!
Gerry
I noticed a little surface rust beginning on the side bar. I told SIL how to slide fire box over, get the side bar sanded and hit it with primer then high temp rustoleum. Though honestly other things are degrading on it rather quickly (not related to the frame), where without a full on restore by skilled individual how much longer it will be practical. Burner hold downs are pretty much rotted away, grease tray slides are gonna go in the next 2-3 years I think. He's doing pretty well keeping the old thing going, but it's either gotta be fully torn down and fully restored (not something I have time for nor does he have all the skillset for) so, I'm not sure how it's "fate" will go at this point. I'd love to see it restored but the other issue is it's no longer the original so it's such a hodge podge of mix and match parts I think a resto would be very hard to do

It’s cool to see someone wanting to keep something going as long as possible, not being part of a throw-away society.

And at least if they want a restored one I think you know a few sources where they can get one 😉

I think I'd recommend perhaps he hire one of you guys to restore it properly. I.E. Steve lives not far from them. Not saying he does these type of "contract" rebuilds just simply using his skill level and location as an example
