They were made to be dual purpose ones. But, most people leave them in, carbon develops on the probe and it's stuck in there pretty good. Try squiring a little oven cleaner on the shaft and up into the lid area. From the inside. It will soften the carbon and help it be removed
Yah, if the reason it is stuck is gunk on the probe, then do what Larry said first. I was assuming it was stuck in the bracket on the outside of the lid.
