Removing lid handle on OTG

I recently purchased some add-on features for both of my One Touch grills (an 18.5 and a 22.5).
One of the items is an entirely new handle assembly for the lid. I live in Germany and I see these pre-installed on the Webers in the German stores. It's basically a handle with a type of heat shield at its base which supposedly protects the handle from getting too hot. Here is the link to the item (hope it works):

My question is: what would be the best way to remove my current lid handle? It seems to be welded onto the lid itself, so I was thinking to cut it off with a grinder. Any better ideas?

Thanks!

I will be posting pictures whenever I do this job. I have a seperate thread that is currently on the second page (out of 57)of this Charcoal Grill thread. It is called "Another 18.5" OTS to OTG upgrade"

Since you'll be drilling into the lid to get the new ones to mount, why not drill out the spot welds holding on the current handle?

Honestly, though I'd suggest returning the add on handle and source some wooden handles to replace the plastic ones you have. The wood doesn't get as hot and doesn't involve hacking your lid up.

I agree with Shawn. Return that travesty of a handle and get a wood replacement.

I am saying this somewhat tongue in cheek, but those heat shield handles look a heck of a lot more dangerous to my fingers and knuckles than the good old fashioned plain ones. I pray they never become standard here ... ...

Hey wait a minute, are those handles standard here on the 26ers?

Yep, Gerd. Very much the standard handle on the 26. I haven't cooked with mine yet, but it fits the big kettle well. The high profile design would look kinda goofy on the smaller 22.

Thanks for the idea of drilling out the old handle. May try that.

Honestly, I've never been a huge fan of the wooden handles. I think I remember them from our family's various Weber's growing up. However since I've owned my own Webers for the past 10 or so years I've only known the plastic (or nylon, I guess) handles.
