Reflectix question

Hi all,
On a recent episode of pitmasters i saw harry soo using what looked like a plain old hot water heater blanket to insulate his wsm against the wind.

After going to HD to get one I just wasnt comfortable with using it because I was worried that the fiberglass middle would catch on fire, etc.

After searching the archives I see people using reflectix in a number of ways. I did not want to go to the expense of using a dog kennel as I saw in a great mod or one of the great cabinet like enclosures. So what would happen if I just wrapped the reflectix around the cooker? Will it catch on fire? Scorch?

Any help is appreciated!!

I use it in new construction on unoccupied areas where the inspectors require a low flame spread or non-com material.
I don't think it makes much of a difference, but I wouldn't wrap it too tight. I would leave an air-space of an inch or so.
The big rolls (50-100') are expensive, but you can get 10-20' rolls at Ace.
If you haven't already seen this, some pics and more info here.

Beware of Reflectix and how you use it. I wrapped my WSM with it on a cold day and it was fine until I took the lid off, the temp spiked and the reflectix melted on to the WSM.

BTW, can you paint WSM's

Not sure but the WSM was running @ 250 for about an hour w/ the Reflectix then I had the lid off for about 5 minutes, maybe a little less.

My guess would be about 300

I’m thinking that if you needed to insulate a WSM, why not get one of those plastic 55 gallon drums, cut the top and bottom off and use that to block the wind and reflect the heat? You could even line it with something reflective. It should be far enough away to avoid catching fire, but just close enough to help with heat retention. My thinkng if that doesn't work, you probably don't want to go outside!
