Red head Weber Genesis 1000 question on ignition

Red head Weber Genesis 1000 question on ignition.
I am looking at a used Weber Genesis that I believe is a Genesis 1000, It isn't in the best shape but is listed for under 100.00
seller says it has to be "lit manually igniter not working"

My question are: ( Bruce may chime in :redgenesis1:)

  • what all is involved in repairing or replacing the gas catcher/igniter or striker ignition on these?
  • What else should I look for when looking at this grill?
  • the side table looks salvageable, it looks to be missing the left fold down table. Is that something that can be replaced?
  • Is this a Genesis 1000? I notice the logo with kettle on the left , so i believe this is an early 90's mode

I believe this is the correct Weber schematics

If I do pick this up, I will see if I can reverse engineer the strike igniter. Just want to be sure its worth my time to restore. My son & I would be driving up from TX & will pick this up on the way home, that is of course if the juice is worth the squeeze.

I believe what you have there is a Weber 900.
This grill having a shallower cook box than the 1000 and no casters on the left side. Either way they igniter it's easy to change out. I believe it's Weber part #7509 for about $20

Thanks for the response, you might be correct.
The reason I thought it to be a 1000 is the wood side table,It could be just missing the small casters on the left. It also seems to be missing the folding table in front. How can I replace the part that folds down ( I can add my own wood slats)?
Would I have to replace igniter & gas catcher? Would those parts still be available or a grill this old?

It's definitely not a 1000 but if you're lucky the owner still has the flip up table. Sometimes placed inside the grill when I pick them up. I pick up parts grills for stuff like that. I did just buy a brand new flip up table on Facebook Marketplace and sometimes they're available. Yes you can definitely change out the wood slats for whatever you want. The igniter you need I believe is a Weber part #7509 for about 20 bucks.

Those lower racks on the bottom with the center frame support tube steel is styling of the 900 also. Versus 1000 having frame tube steel on the front and back.

Thanks for the information Josh. The 7509 part number didn't show up on the 900 or 1000 schematic.

I see what you are referring to with the deeper box and framing. The 1000 has 2 rows of flavorizer bars. I am pretty new to the LP gas grilling, only use the Weber Q , I am loving the quick convenience of it and learning indirect heating with the Weber Q has got me wanting to explore more options in the LP side. I will always be a charcoal guy, but will grill more days/ week with LP. Save the charcoal sessions for Brisket and and pork butts.

I need to make room for a bigger LP grill, I have 2 Performers and will be torn on which one to part with.
I have modified them both to be really good grills for low & slow.

I dropped a Crimson Performer Deluxe into a standard Performer, added an SnS smoke port, makes for a good smoking rig.

I may just sell my Performer Deluxe as is ( I rarely use the Touch-N Go propane assist), and keep the Crimson Performer. I would love to have a full line of red Webers adding a Genesis to the lineup.

EI serial number signifies that it is a 1997.

I recall seeing the letter code table never saw the cypher " AUTHORIZED". I worked at an Osco/Skaggs drug store when I was in highschool. The price tags had a letter code cypher " CHARLESTON". The letters (& corresponding numbers 1-0) indicated the actual retailers cost of the item. As employees our discount was cost + 5%. "STEAL" = $78.35

Never came across 10 letter cypher since I worked that job.

We used PATHFINDER to code our cost on the back of the price tag on used bikes in the shop I worked in. The boss let us negotiate a bit that way.

I would hate to part with either, they are both rare breeds.

If space is a concern the Base-model performer cart can be made smaller by folding the table down. I have a performer with the fold-down table and TBH I would prefer the larger cart with a fixed work surface.

So the real question for you @ChadRex is which cart do you prefer? Once you decide on the cart you can decide if you want blue or crimson.

I’d clean one up real good and moth ball it in a dark corner, because eventually those bowls will require a replacement.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing, stash one away just in case:
- you change your mind on carts
- you decide you don't want a gas grill
- you get a really small gas grill like a Q or a spirit and find you have space for two performers
- you move somewhere with more space

I like the Crimson because it's a unicorn. No other standard Performer that color. Someone on here dropped a blue kettle in the same style cart. My crimson one reminds me of the Weber One Touch Platinum (platypus) that I would love to get my hands on.

The Weber Performer Deluxe is nice, I could easily swap the 2 kettles as they both are Performer Deluxe kettles.

It is nice having 2 kettles( actually 3 including 1980s Happy Cooker) We also have a Weber Q 2800N+
I really don't need another grill. If anything would love to have an older Genesis for nostalgia.

I use the Q for quick week night meals, & full griddle smash burgers/ breakfast. The Weber Q is perfect for pan seared fish using a cast iron skillet & is my favorite pizza oven.

I have 2 sons and I will eventually pass those down to them.
