Question about therm for the lid

I see one of the simplest mods for adding a therm is to whittle away a bit of cork to fit in one of the vent holes (or, use a bit of foil, or some wire) to suspend it. Curious why it needs to be suspended? Why couldn't you just drop it in there with nothing to hold it up except the face of the therm?

I think just letting it dangle in the hole could,first fall out and damage the themometer,and second possibly pick up some heat from the lid and give you a false reading. I bit the bullet and drilled ahole to mount my thermometer. A bit of high temp paint and it looks factory installed. HTH

I use the cork method myself. It works just as well as an electronic or any other form of measuring.
