I'm doin a butt for about 20 people, what size and how many should i get??? /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Starting with 8 to 10 pounds of raw product should feed 20 people (you will lose 40 to 50% to shrinkage during the cook). This based on normal eaters should the group be young men then plan on doing more.

Hi Scotty and welcome!

Here is a formula................

RW = (SP X P)/SH

RW = Raw Weight in lbs.

SP= serving portion in lbs.

P = number of people

SH = shrinkage factor in %

As Jim has mentioned, when it comes to serving portions....1/4 lb. is plenty for your average group. But, plan 1/3 lb. if all guys.

I always plan on 50% shrinkage for my butts.

RW = (0.25 X 20) / .50

RW = 5 / 0.50

RW = 10 lbs.

Thank god Paul spoke up! I was going to pipe in myself! I usually plan on 1 lb or a little more per person, and I have a good amount left over.

I usually get a 6-7 lb butt (doesn't take forever to smoke) and count on feeding 10 people with 1 butt (averaging 2 sandwiches for most people). 20 ppl= 2 6lb butts in my book.
