Q300 Left Grate Deteriorates Faster Than Right Grate

Any ideas on why the left grate deteriorates and rusts much sooner than the right grate? Maybe the burner is too hot on that side of the grill? This is the second set where this has happened. Both were the Weber replacement grates.

I am going to buy a new set of grates, this time I am going to try aftermarket grates, and am wondering if the burner should be replaced as well.

I doubt it's got a problem. Likely it's the side you cook on more. Those Q's are pretty reliable. Very simple. If you keep it cleaned it works perfectly. I'd pull the burner and, get a good really stiff wire brush (like a welder's brush) and brush the hell outta the little ports, wash it out with some "BrakeKleen" and then let it dry.

How old is it, you got any pics?
What I mean is they are porcelain enameled cast iron grates and they should last for awhile.

Either make sure you grill on both sides of the grill evenly or simply swap the two halves around every so often.

The grates are Weber porcelain enameled grates put into service September 2017. After the first year or two, I could see the left side was rusting faster than the right side. I thought maybe excessive heat on one side was burning off seasoning on the one side.

Your grill is fine. Just clean it

Do you ever take your grates out and soak them before cleaning them? They have tons of Weber Q’s in Australia and I read on a forum there that because the Q has no flavorizer bars, they can develop hairline cracks in the enamel from temperature differences and if you soak them the water can seep in and they start to rust beneath the enamel and it flakes off. Apparently Weber Australia has said not to soak Q grates. Just passing on what I read in posts from down under.

Just gave away my q-320 a few minutes ago. The guy seemed pretty happy.
Looking forward to breaking out that new Q-3200 when we move home.
Such great little grills.

I always felt like mine rusted more on the right side so who knows, I would definitely swap em around.
As a long time Q guy I can say the grates do get nice and seasoned I feel like they only last a few years anyways.

Like Larry, I can’t recommend a Libman brass brush enough for keeping that cast iron looking good.
