Probe Thermometer

I have been using a Taylor probe from Target and I think I am on my 5th or 6th one. Low quality in my opinion.

What probe do you all recommend? It seems like Maverick is the one, but just want to get your thoughts.

Yes, Maverick ET-73's. I have 4 of them and have had them for years. Every couple years I will have to replace a probe, but other than that they're great.

I just ordered the Mav. based on the opinion of the experts in vwb. I will let you know how things turn out once I start smoking with it. I was advised by a friend that this will prevent the need to open the smoker to check the int. temp.Opening it makes you lose too much heat. I am sure I will be happy with it.

The maerick is good, though I'm forever annoyed by it's actual reliable distance compared to its advertised distance. On an overnight cook I have to keep it by the window and hope the beeps will wake me up. Also, the on/off switch inside the battery compartment is truly strange, while the other one just broke. Still, I'm going to get another one. Only real game in town.

I use a Polder 894-90. I like it because it takes two temperatures. It measures the meat, as well as the temperature of the oven.

I too have a Maverick ET 73 and it works really good reading temps. What I don't like about it is I keep losing a signal on the remote.

My wife bought me a polder
hm-360 for Christmas... anyone use one of these? It has dual probes, but not sure if it measures the temp in the smoker or not.

I use the single probe Weber remote sense thermo..$29 works great

Joe ..that Polder you got is one of the best....and it'll measure the temp any where you put the probes ..two probes is nice feature! If you want to measure cooker internal temp, put the probe through a cork or potatoe, etc so its not resting on metal

I just bought and used the Mav ET-73. Works great. Apparently I had been cooking at 30*F hotter than I thought I was (using the built-in WSM thermometer). By the way, the internal on/off switch is for water-proofing purposes. The internal switch is surrounded by a water-tight rubber "washer", you'll notice.

Hay there all....

In my previous life I used to be involved in factory process control relative to temperature and data aquisition. I was always partial to a company called Omega out of Connecticut because of their product quality and outstanding support. In the last few years, they've started producing wireless products that read out onto a laptop, but they were still a bit price prohibitive for BBQ. They've recently added a lower cost set of products that while still a bit pricey, are very much within reach of the mainstream BBQ community. I recently ordered up a transmitter and a receiver to play with. They're so far outstanding and of far better quality than the stuff thats out there marketed towards BBQ. Another nice thing is that one receiver can monitor 48 transmitters, and the software comes with the receiver for free. It charts and graphs. I used it in a cooler to track ribs that I had to prepare 4 days in advance of cooking. I then used it during the cook on the 23rd in several capacities and it performed amazingly.

Check out Omega Wireless and scroll down to the MWTC stuff. A real basic thermocouple is included, but more appropriate probes can be ordered. If anyone is interested, you can ask me more about that later.

Enjoy, Brett

I use a Maverick also.......the remote feature no longer works (not sure why). However, I can see the temp in the main unit right out my window, so no worries.

I'm very confident the temp is spot on.
