Probe Installation

I just purchased the 18.5 WSM and the Maverick ET-732. What is the best way to mount openings for the probe? Should it be above the cooking grill or slightly below it??

Welcome Tony. This may not be the best forum for the question as it mostly relates to automatic temperature control posts. Your post may be redirected by Chris A (the moderator).
That said, probe positioning is really a preference as you'll get many opinions here.
I'm not sure what you mean by "What is the best way to mount openings for the probe(s)." You don't need to modify the WSM to use the ET. Some simply sandwich the wire(s) between the lid and middle and others run the wires through the lid vent. Either works fine. If you do want to drill into the WSM, I would suggest grate level but, again, it's preference. The few degrees of variance won't affect your cooks.

Good luck !

Tony,
I think James has stated the possibilities. Personally, I'd rather have the probe opening in the middle section of the smoker. It is somewhat inconvenient to have the probes run through the lid when you have to remove the lid. Not impossible, but I couldn't find an easy way to do it.

I use the bbq wsm eyelets, but the wire on your probe is too thick to get through those eyelets. My Weber digital works fine and the probes for my digi automatic temperature control work fine, but the Maverick ET-732 is too thick.

Gary,

Thanks for the information. My new WSM should be here today and I wanted to make whatever mods I need before staring to cook with it. I guess I will try the mod with lamp rods as mentioned here on this site. That way I can hang the transmitter on the side of the WSM and run the temp probes through the center section. Your thoughts or advice?? Thanks again for the help and very best regards,

Tony,
The lamp rod mod looks good. Also, Cajun Bandit sells a 3/8" grommet that the Mav. et-732 is suppose to fit. They also sell a 1/4" that the Mav. will not fit.

If you haven't tried, you might want to try the probes through the top vent before you do anything. I don't think the pit thermometer would be a problem. It's the food probe that gave me a problem. If I had three or four arms it might have worked better for me.

I'm one of the least handy folks on this forum, but I installed the Cajun Bandit 3/8" grommet on my WSM without difficulty.
Both the meat and barbecue probes on my Maverick 732 fit neatly through the single hole that's about top rack high.
