power washed the wsm and was surprised

So I powerwashed the wsm and notice something. Usually I have to work to keep a temp at 350 (two full chimneys, empty pan, full vents, prop the door, etc.). But after the wash, I needed to half close the vents to keep it under 350 and could have hit 375-400 without much of a problem. Anyone else notice what a temp difference you get with a clean wsm?

Too lazy to power wash but noticed the same effect in reverse order as mine ran hotter when new and then cooler as the "patina" (gunk) built up. I remember reading that would happen so was not surprised. I like it better broken in kind of like my cast iron cookware.

Yep. Likewise when it's really clean it can be hard to keep down to 225 even with the vents shut if it's a leaky unit. The gunk definitely fills in the gaps. I would just as soon let it stay dirty and have it work in a consistent fashion rather than trying to chase the airtightness of the unit around.

I went back and looked at my logs. When I first got my WSM, I really struggled keeping the heat down. With 3years of consistent use and no power washing, I find that it goes up more slowly and holds a bit better. To get the really high temps, I have to set the grill grate up on the 2nd meat grate.

I read some threads awhile back that identifies why it runs so hot new out of the box. Must be reflection or refraction or rejection......one of tions.
