A local grocery has Smithfield "Lean Generation" Boston Butts on sale. They say "self basting". Is this good for smoking on the WSM?

Thanks.

Self-basting is another way of saying enhanced, which means they've been brined or injected with a solution to help retain moisture. I don't think most true BBQers find it necessary for pork butts, or, if so, prefer to do it with their own seasonings rather than pay extra for pre-injected product.

Maybe in this case, they're doing it to make up for a leaner than normal butt.(?) If the price is right, it's worth a try.

i'm a bit confused, Smithfield lean generation at my local store is an all natural product and not enhanced but if it says self basting I would wonder too!!

They are still not my chice in Butts because they are bred to be lower in fat and over a long cook like a pork butt that fat is what renders out and keeps the meat moist. IBP is my brand of choice and available at Sams.
