The folding one looks like a Thermapen, that's about it.

I don't have a weber , so , no I don't know about them but....When I was dithering over whether to spend the money on a thermapen or not , I looked at the webers and according to their ads it takes 15 seconds to get a steady reading.. The reviews on amazon say its faster than that , but 5 or6 seconds is still too slow when you know the thermapen is truly instant. 2 seconds and you've got it. Best 90 bucks I ever spent.

i don't quick check temps enough to spend $$$ on a thermapen. if i can find the weber one cheap it might be good enough for me. most times if temps are critical i will already have a remote temp probe in already. thanks for the info !

good point. I guess I like the quick check for small steaks or chops where you cant really have a probe in each piece. for what it is I think the weber is priced right.

for some reason i never check steaks and such. just kinda go by feel . should i be worried about this ?
George I would say go with what works. If it tastes good to you and more importantly the wife ;) keep doing what your doing. I wouldn't worry about it.

Have it. Used it once. Waste of money.

I'd say it's closer to 20 seconds before you get a stable read... That's an awfully long time when you're searing steaks, and the smell of the hairs on your hand burning, isn't all that appetizing. Found a "cheap-charlie" instant thermometer at my local grocery for a third of the price of the weber. That one is specified to 5-6 seconds, but it'll actually take about 10 seconds (and it's accurate). But it's still way too slow. I'am tired of wasting money on (cheap) thermometers. The next time, I'll fork up for a thermapen, and the time after that, a Maverick 732.

A few comments at this thread. I since gifted my Thermapen away and haven't missed it .. 2-3 sec difference to me is not worth 4x the price. I had to have mine serviced twice so my Thermapen price after 5 yrs was about $150.

I use the Thermopen on chicken, pork chops and meatloaf.
and, as with many of my everyday cooking tools, i'd be lost without it.
at first, the cost of it did not sit too well with me...
but, as I did with the WSM after years and years of smokin' in a kettle, I did what a lot of folks say...
"bite the bullet"
or
"pulled the trigger"
and bought one.
