I've parted out several grills lately and I have a surplus of stainless tool hooks from the Genesis 1000 series. Two hooks in particular were really bent, so I had no qualms about experimenting with them. The tools I used to bend these into their new shape were
needle-nose pliers
large vice-grips
channel-lock pliers
a screwdriver
Here's a picture of a stock tool hook, versus the kettle hooks I've made:
Lots of angles are needed to perform the following:
1) Clip on to the edge of the kettle with minimal resistance, but not so loosely that it falls off when you pull the kettle lid up
2) Clear the grate
3) The shape of the clip places pressure on both the inside and outside of the kettle so that when the tool is placed, the hook does not fall off
Each one took a while to make by hand, and you can see that they are not shaped exactly alike, but they are close enough. They work pretty well, too. The best part, of course, is that they were free.
