Performer with or without gas assist?

I need some opinions and information. I'm upgrading from a OTS to a Performer, but I'm unsure whether or not I want the gas lighting feature. I do some smokes on my OTS, and want to do the same on a Performer. My question is does the hole where the gas igniter enters the bowl make it harder to regulate the air and temperatures? I don't need the gas igniter, as I've lived without one for years, but if it makes life alot easier then I'll get it. Opinions?
 
Hi David-
I've done both. I had a SS Performer with the gas assist and it made life very simple. I'm now using a OTG and lighting the coals with a chimney. Very simple too. If the cost of the gas assist isn't an issue then it's just a matter of which one you want. By the way, I just bought a Performer with the gas assist, again. Good luck in your decision making and there's no wrong answer.
 
What I'm wondering does the hole where the gas igniter enters the bowl make heat regulation more difficult for long, slow cooks?
 
I have had my performer for a couple of months and I love the gas assist....It is the perfect grill/smoker.I am 69 years old and have been through a lot of cookers and this is the best all around cooker I have ever had....the gas assist means no more charcoal starter for me.Easier to use than a gasser !!
 
i've smoked on my performer several times and never had any problems.

does the extra hole let in extra air? of course.
but it's not so much extra air that your temps will run away.
 
If you have a problm with temps because of the gas assist you can seal around it with high temp silicone.
 
Thanks for the opinions and information. I just ordered a green Performer and cover on Amazon..free super saver shipping and no sales tax...nobody local has them in stock...
