Perfecting salmon

Hey all,
Got ribs, butts, & turkey's working out great. But I cant smoke salmon worth a damn. I got some real alaskan alder smoked salmon from a friend of mine who was up there receintly, and said he saw them smoking it, but could not answer any of my questions. He brought me a small portion that was wrapped in several layers of plastic, and was frozen. Color was good. There was no sign of fat, or any rub at all. It flaked apart very easy. Most of all, it smelled & tasted great. There was no stamp on it. It looked like it came from a camp site. I would like to learn how to smoke salmon like this if I could. Does nay one have any advise?
