I had a 80's model kettle grill and loved it except for removing ashes. Real pain in the butt for me. I've never used one or even seen one so have been researching the One Touch system and am having some trouble figuring out how it works. Specifically, how is it designed to keep ashes from clogging the bowl vents, especially on a long cook? Also do you have to operate the ash removal system during a cook?

Thanks for any help

I sweep it slowly a couple times during a cook depending if I use lump or briqs.I just look at the ring holes a watch the amount of ash drop until done. Closing the top vent first helps on keeping ashes from flying up and away on you're food.
Well worth it IMO.

Scotty,
What Tim said.
IMO, the One Touch Gold is the only way to go, since the OT Silver just has the ash dish, not an attached ash pan.

I read your post just before heading out to clean the ash and crud from my Performer's bowl (same as the OTG set-up)
so I shot a short video for you.

Thanks for the replies Tim and Bob and thanks much for the video Bob. From what I'm seeing the bottom air vents and the ash disposal slots are one and the same. I thought there were two separate openings but the video clears that up. I probably won't be doing a lot of long cooks on the kettle since my WSM 22.5 has to work too but too much trouble to convert it back and forth from a smoker to a griller.

Thanks again.

If you do get it, use a sharpie to mark the ring where the sweeper handle is in relation to the vents being 1/4-1/2 -3/4 closed.
Dang near impossible to see the vents once loaded up with meat, coals,drip-pan.
