Oak wine barrels

Has anyone used "used" oak wine barrels for smoking? We have a local vineyard that sells the barrels. Thought I would purchase, and cut up for smoking. Any pros/cons?
 
I've had a Gallo Sonoma barrel on my patio for several years that I, from time to time, have considered chopping up for smokewood. Popping the bung and inhaling indicates that it once held Cabernet.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely going to buy one and cut it up. Maybe they'll give me a deal on a damaged barrel, since I don't care about the appearance. I'll let you know how the first smoke goes.
