I've been a Weber owner since the 70's when I bought a kettle from Kmart. Then a redhead around 1990, still have it and it looks and works just fine.

Bought a black Genesis Silver at a garage sale last week and I'm cleaning it up. One thing is odd. The Top cover surface is "cooked". No amount of scrubbing, chemicals, steel wool touches the gray haze that splotches the top. The top surface is clean and super smooth to the touch. And the font surface cleaned up well and looks fine.

Pretty sure this puppy has seen more than its share of high heat and/or sun damage. Anyone seen anything like that? Not good with pics yet, soon.

Welcome to the forum Bill. We love to rehab old Webers here. Still some of the best grills made.

Sounds like someone tried to clean it when hot or put something on it when it was too hot. You might not be able to regain the shine in those shots.

The lid that was originally on my Genesis had the same issue. I contacted Weber and they said there was nothing I could do to fix it. It just meant that I "had" to continue hunting CL to get my hands on another one to swap lids with...and 7 or 8 months later it got me my redhead for free!

If you look at the picture of the blacktop with my recent post (http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?65761-Restored-Genesis-My-First), you will see a similar issue. The fading can be seen on the front side, but it was also a problem on the top.

All the tricks -- using steel wool with Dawn, etc. -- would not restore the black hood to its pristine condition. I had thought that because the lids were more like porcelain and glass than like metal, they could not stain so much. But, obviously, they can. As you can see, I found a nice maroon hood in very good shape.

The good news for you is that you can probably look for lids from LP and natural gas grills; in my area, the natural gas grills tend to be less desirable and therefore less expensive and more available.

The hunt continues!
