Not a Weber, but ....

I was at my local Lowes when I came across a Char Griller smoker box. I know it's not a Weber, but, I really liked the thick steel construction, cast iron grates, cool barrel look, plus it has a wood handle :). I try to tailgate as much as I can and came up with this. I used a hitch welded into an "L" shape, an old steel umbrella holder with another hitch bolted to that. Now I have a great grill I can take anywhere with me and a cooks a good Tri-Tip. What do you guys think?

nice setup. looks like it works for you. the only concern i have is how much that moves while going down the road. maybe tie it down a bit.

It looks pretty close to the rear hatch... hope you don't have any heat issues with the hatch when you fire up the smoker ....

I agree with Mike, I hope you take the stand and remove it from the hitch. I'd worry about how close it is to the vehicle.

I have that same exact grill I bought several years ago and I love that pedestal mod you did! Great job!
And hey, I used to live in Hayward.....decades ago and attended Chabot. I miss the bay area. :)

That looks like a sweet setup! I'm curious about how much heat would transfer to your Ford, after all heat generally goes up and not so much out? Have you taken any measurements of the temps around the grill and the back of your vehicle while using the smoker? I'm guessing it may not be a problem. It looks neat, great idea!

Thanks for the replies guys, I don't cook with it on the hitch. I take the stand with me, It can get pretty hot, I think I got it to 550 with half the grate full of lump. I normally take the grates off if I have a long trip especially with the bumpy ride of my old '94 Explorer. An anti rattle hitch pin helps out. I'm glad you guys liked it and I appreciate your tips and pointers. It's one of the reasons I became a member ...
