Newbie Genesis E330 natural gas question - regulators.

Looking forward to picking up tips, tricks and bbq ideas on this forum. I picked up this Genesis at a reasonable price and had it deep cleaned and fixed up by a local bbq restorer. He did a fantastic job. I think he is sending me some before and after photos - which I will post when I get them.

In the meantime - I wonder if any forum members may be able to help with a gas regulator question. When I had the gas line installed, the plumber put a regulator on the tap and made mention that's the best place for it.

So I don't want to do the wrong thing - do I remove the regulator on the Genesis and stick with the regulator on the tap, or vice versa - remove the regulator on the tap and use the regulator on the Genesis? Or keep them both? I'm in Melbourne, Australia if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance - and given how careful you need to be with gas, I am happy to get the plumber back to do this if I need, but in case it is a simple solution - thought I'd check in here first...

That regulator inside the grill in the pic is not factory on an E330.

Edit. I'd call the plumber and ask what pressure the regulator he installed is set to measured in "inches of water column". Hopefully he says 7 inches. Then remove the regulator inside.
 
Welcome to the forum Michael.Can you verify that your grill came with a regulator from the factory? I don't recall if that particular model came with one here in the States and it could just be Australian spec. I know that many NG gas models here in the US were designed to not need a regulator but will still work fine with one. I'm not sure about having two though, maybe someone else can add to this.
 
Thanks for your quick replies Dan and Steve! Will see what else pops up here - but good call Dan - I can check with the plumber. I have also emailed Weber customer service here in Australia, but they have a 2-4 day response time. Was hoping to fire it up tonight!

inside the cabinet is a sticker with the part number and details on the gas supply.

The sticker is on the vertical support in the middle holding up the grease drip pan. You can lookup the part diagram from the serial number on weber's support site.

I guess Australia has a different standard for outdoor cooking appliances than the US? Interesting little tidbit, and another day I learned something new about these things.

There is no need for the second regulator UNLESS your household gas pressures there in AU are crazy high. I.E., back when I was working for Delta Airlines in MSP (Minneapolis) I was renting a bedroom from my wife's friend in a suburb of MSP. As partial rent I would help do chores for her (handyman) stuff. Replaced a kitchen sink for her, ran a line to her gas grill, etc. And noted something very weird. All the gas lines in her house were small diameter soft copper. Running at quite high pressure. So, everything there that burned gas needed a regulator to get that high pressure down. I don't recall how high that pressure was but I do remember there being warning stickers on all the gas lines. It was something I'd never seen before (or since).
But, if your home there in AU is running normal NG pressures i.e. about 7" WC or about 178mmWC than the second regulator does no good and will actually hinder the operation of the grill. BUT, if that regulator is bringing line pressure DOWN to 7"WC then YES you need to keep the regulator in the grill

Is that something you’d have to call the utility company on? Or is there a meter in the house that displays it? States side anyways.

If you know how to use and have a manometer you can check yourself. I know though at wife's friend's house in MSP, a standard manometer would not really work as it would be too high a pressure for it. But, the OP could simply check the pressure out of the regulator that was installed by the tech
 
Thanks for all the info guys. Interesting to see the difference between the US and AUS versions Dan - with the regulator pic there for the AUS version, but not listed as a part. A little project for next weekend now - and I should hear back from Weber Australia before then too. But yeah - running it with two seems like a good place to start and take it from there depending on performance.
