Newbie clay pot question

New WSM owner with quick realization that placing a 2/3 full water pan into my 18.5 WSM with hot briqs or lump peering at me from below was something to be done with great care. Brought home from HD today a 12" clay flower pot base which fits perfectly, as ya'all said it would. Not only safer, but it adds greater stability to the unit. If one clay insert is good, has anyone done any experimenting to find if doubling the 12" clay inserts modulates the heat any better?

Because I didn't think it through the first time I fired up the WSM. I was halfway down the the middle section with the pan and thought, Oh s---, I better not drop this thing! The second time around I did what everybody does the first time and filled from above. Your query was very tactful, Dave. Thanks for the reply.

Clyde I did get two clay saucers from HD thinking the same thing. The problem I dad was fitting them in there and still being able to foil. I felt that there was not enough space to catch the drippings and did not want them getting into the coals. Basically didn't want ash getting kicked up. I then had this genius idea to use the second saucer to start my chimney on. Only to crack it the first time out! LOL I think one is just fine. Vince
