New vs. old 22.5 WSM

I have a 2009 22.5 WSM and am trying to resolve the charcoal grate interference issue with the bottom vent. I need someone with a new charcoal grate to measure the diameter of the new grate (the one that sits below the vent holes). My grate is about 18 ¼” in diameter and I was wondering if Weber used a smaller grate or did they actually raise the vent holes? My Performer charcoal grate fits just below the vent holes but the ring will not fit on the Performer grate. I am trying to make some clearance for my Guru adapter. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Dale,

One thing you can do is to simply bend the little vent stop up so it doesn't interfere with the grate. Yes, the vent cover will now be able to rotate all the way around but it's no big deal.

My understanding is Weber raised the vents on the newer ones. Like Russ said, just break off the one tab. More info here.

I have broken off the tab but the grate is now in the way of my Guru diffuser. I need to either raise the grate or lower the grate.
I have read the discussions on this issue but I am currious if the new design uses a smaller grate.

I don't believe so. My BIL has a 2011 WSM and his measures the same at 18.25"
