New Used Grill

I picked up this used grill on CL. This is for my son-in-law. During a move, I trashed a piece of crap Charbroil grill that I had given him because it was trash and he couldn't have it at the appartment he was moving into. I told him when he got a house I'd get him a new grill. Well, he's in a house and here's my grill to keep my word.

It's a Genesis Silver A. I got it off Craigslist for $75 and I put another $120 into it. I didn't do much in terms of cleaning it other than scraping all the crud out of it. The top, as you can see still could use some work, but it's just carbon and I didn't want to spend a lot of time on the rehab of this grill. As you can see in the last pic is that I did put money where it matters - SS grates and flavorizer bars. It also needed an igniter. It seems to work well and the project came in at just under $200 which is half the cost of a new grill. I think it will do him well.

Looks pretty nice. It's nearly identical to mine except that I have a CI grate that sits on top of the flavorizers.

So... What's that orange thing behind it?

Edit: I have managed to get a couple extra covers that fit a Silver A. I would like to sell at least one. the other slouches on my Q. Let me know if you want one.

Hank - This one came with CI grates but no flavorizer bars. The CI grates had rust on them and while I know I could rehab them, I just don't have the time right now. So I got the SS grates which I know will look nicer and last longer because I don't give my son-in-law too much credit for knowing how to keep things maintained.

That orange thing is my new toy! I my cub cadet died so I got a Kubota with a 54" mower, front end loader, tiller and a snow blade. I went over board for what I need, but I love it. It's a 1860 sub compact which is a little bigger than my cub cadet was, but the cub was a garden tractor and this is a tractor with PTO's for the mower and the tiller (3 point hitch). The FEL was a extra that I didn't need, but like a lot of things you don't need, once you have it, it feels like you need it.

TM - Thanks. rehabing a Weber is such a great value. I can't imagine why anyone would buy a cheap grill when you can rehab a Weber and have a really nice grill. Even my wife said something like "you can tell how much more heavy duty that Weber is". My personallity is that I would have liked to completely strip it and refurbish it to like new condition, but as I've said, just too pressed for time right now. For what I have into it (time and money), I'm real happy to be giving this to my son-in-law (which as most fathers probably understand means I'm doing it for my daughter

It happened that there were some CI grates on a makeshift fire pit in our yard when we moved in. When I brought my Silver A home it had a really cheesy bargain grate on it and was missing two flavorizers. I found that the CI grates fit acceptably well so I cleaned them up and have been using them since. They have close bars (like the grate on a Q) and the bars are about 3/4" tall so it has a lot of mass which makes for nice grill marks:

I have the SS grate on my Silver B and like it, but I think the CI grate works a little better.

My son has a Cub Cadet 7265 on which he's adapted a Massey Ferguson FEL. He also has a woods mower, tiller, box blade and three point mount forks for his. He's moving to a smaller place and if he can't sell it for a decent price, I get to keep it for him until they can move back to something with a few acres.
