Maybe verify that the Atmel is seated properly and that none of the pins missed the socket?

If you can get that far with the HeaterMeter board connected, go to LinkMeter -> AVR Firmware -> Bundled Firmware and try flashing hm.hex to see if the Pi can see the AVR chip at all

Still have the black boxes on the display, when I log into the RPI, I now show the ambient temp of 285 degrees, I flashed the firmware as you suggested and this is what I got. It appears to be working, I'm still having a display issue.

That's great news! Are the LEDs behaving normally now?

They are, the red LED flashes then everythng boots up. Not sure where. To start trouble shooting the LCD.

Which LCD module are you using again? And hos is it connected? A pic may help.

Varitronix MDLS-20464B 20x4 Character LCD Modulue, I have it attached using a flat 6 inch ribbon cable.

And you have the display oriented so that the connector is in the upper left of the display with pin 1 on the left?

Not sure why or how, but it is now working. thanks for your help, im sure I will have more questions as I begin to learn how to maniplate it.
