Got a new Performer today from HD. It was $279 w/o tax. I went to BBQ Galore and a couple of places and they were all $329. On another note got the first cook in tonight. Grilled Lemon Chicken, grilled red potatoes and grilled asparagus with garlic and balsamic vinegar. All in all it was a good cook. Charcoal was on sale, 2/20#'s for $17.87 at HD also. Being as I have never cooked with this typed of grill I followed some buddies suggestion for a smaller cook. (There are only us 2) I placed 12 briqs in each pan and fired her up. It turned itself off, Didn't read that anywhere. Coals were orange and hot. Everything cooked well but, a little long for my tastes. Guess I will try more charcoal tomorrow night. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks for reading.

Gunar I have mine for a month and now I think it is all I need.I have found grilling I like to place coals in the middle light the gas for about 5 minutes and in about 15 minutes the coals are ready... rake them to the side and grill over them.I do like the baskets for indirect cooking.
Mine does not cut off by itself...unless thats somthing new ...you have a problem.

Most of use a full chimney for a cook, rather than a few dozen. You get a much hotter fire and a longer cook. When you're done close all vents and the fire will go out. The next time you fire your grill up take the partially burned coals from the last cook and mix them with new charcoal and burn them again.

Gunar, did you try to ignite the gas again? To my knowledge it's not supposed to cut off without you turning it off...a problem, maybe?
Anyhow, it didn't take long for me to trash the baskets (they're a good idea in theory...but useless, IMO)....not to mention that 24 briqs total just ain't gonna give you that much heat...
Get yourself a chimney here to fire up your coals: http://www.amazon.com/Weber-74...id=1330924220&sr=8-2
I pretty much fill that puppy 3/4 to full for most cooks...and I usually only cook for two myself...I like a good hot fire.
I use one of these on one side of my grill to hold the briqs, but you could just dump the coals as well: http://www.amazon.com/Weber-74...id=1330924451&sr=8-1
I actually bought these in conjunction with another charcoal grate in order to bring the coals up a few inches for an even hotter fire just below the cooking grate & get great sears on meats (the second grate sits on top of the rails).

I think the Performer comes with baskets like this: http://www.amazon.com/Weber-74...MGM4/ref=pd_sim_lg_1

I use them for indirect cooks but nearly always use a charcoal chimney for lighting the charcoal. Like others have said, use a full or nearly full chimney and shut the vents when you're done cooking. On the next cook put the new briquettes in the chimney first as the partially burned ones will tend to fall between the grates.

Enjoy!

I checked and lit the burner again. It still has propane. If it is not supposed then maybe I am lucky and I don't have to remember to turn it off. I am using it again tonight with more charcoal and will check to see if it empty or just turns off. Btw I do have the chimney and a WSM 22.5!

Well, I lit it went inside and it was out. About, 4 mins later. So I lit it again and stood there and it didn't go out. Go figure.
