New codes on Weber charcoal grills

I was trying to find a manual on www.weber.com and clicked the link Find the location of your serial number. It says something very interesting:

Charcoal grills use serial codes containing 1 or 2 letters, rather than complete serial numbers.

Beginning 10/1/2012, all charcoal models have another code prefix followed by numbers printed on the damper and the outer carton barcode. This is NOT the code to use when registering the grill. NOTE: Gas Go-anywhere models do not have a damper, but this code is stamped into the burner tube. It can help identify the year.

Sounds like maybe a real serial number on charcoal grills?

Here are some photos of the new vent damper coding. It's clearly a serial number. The first two photos are from the same Weber 22.5" OTG. The third and fourth photos are from two different 22.5" OTGs and as you can see, each of the three grills has a unique code.

All retain the traditional AT date code for 2013 model year.

Had to call Weber after I got my WSM 2 months ago and they wanted that number to register it. The rep stated that it was the serial number.

not really blaming them but i guess they decided that there was to much "warranty" going on. they accused me of cheating them so i don't realy care much about them anymore anyway.
