Hey guys, relatively new to the forum!

Well i just wanted to share my latest CL score. I have been looking for a 18.5" kettle to do my own version of a WSM with a hint of UDS built into it. So i finally found one on CL after much searching. I show up expecting the typical black kettle that has not seen any love since the day it came out of the box. But then the guy walked around the corner with this beauty!! Was i shocked to say the least....the best part....i got it for $20 bucks!!!

So below are some photos. Would love to know what year it is and what they typically go for (not selling it, just curious for my own reference if i see another one for sale).

Also, it has 3 quarter size booboos on the exterior. How do i fix them and should I?

I know this is not what answer your looking for but...I would keep her original that's a good looking grill & use it for Qing & Grilling imo. Actually that is a great loooking old weber.

You will find on this forum that the members are actually very fond of that color, I believe it is known as a "brownie," it has a nice two tone shade on the lid which indicative of the older models. I've read that the give off different colors under light, I'm not sure if it's true as I have never seen one. You can't strip the paint down because it is not painted. It is baked on porcelain. It looks like its in great shape, it also has the daisy wheels on the bottom. What is the letter on the vent on the dome? It's probably an L or something dating back to the 80's. Now that I'm looking at it closer, you have two rivets on the handle, I think this may not even have a letter on it which may make this a pre-1979. These are not that easy to find. The handle on the bottom bowl looks a little off as it is squared off and it looks like its missing the wood handle as compared to the older models which have a metal handle on the bowl but a little more rounded. If that is the case you may have a newer 1980's bowl and a 70's lid. I'm sure someone will chime in and get it right. Do not strip this thing down. Use this one for grilling and bbq and wait for another deal on a 18.5 or a 22.5. If it vintage keep it on the side. If you can take a close up picture of the lid vent, the handles, the inside of the grill and the bottom. It will help the "experts" age date it for you. The wheels do look newer. You may have stumbled upon something here.

I was just messing around, i would never strip this bute!! I think my eyes about popped out of my head when he came around the corner with this. I remained calm though!

I'll go snap some pics for you guys to drool over.

Good thing i only paid 20 bucks eh?!

It's deffinately not a 22, so i just assumed 18.5"...was there more than 1 18.5"??

I'll have to measure tomorrow because if the wife hears me sneaking into the garage 1 more time tonight to look at her and take pictures she's going to get suspicious

Thanks for posting the pictures. After looking at the pictures this is definitely a pre-1979 as its has no coding on the vent and Kendall confirmed it. I've never seen a pre-1979 18". That's why the handle on the bowl had me so confused. I've never seen or had a Weber that old, I've learned what I know from all of the postings. Great find!

Here is link to the view the patent application. The application was filed on 11/10/70, your grill was manufactured between 1971 and 1978, they started coding the vents in 1979. This is the Weber coding system, you see that it starts in 1979.
 
Hmmm, so i wonder how i would figure out more precisely what the year is? It matches dead on to the one in 1973 catalog, but i assume your saying they were identical '71-'78.
 
All I can say is that Weber applied for the permit in 1970 and probably started building in 1971. I know they started the coding system in 1979 so 1978 is the cutoff. I don't know if they had to file for a new permit if any changes were made. If someone can provide a manual from 1971 it will answer the question but I'm pretty sure that it was built between 71-78. I don't think that your gonna get much more information then that. You can call Weber but they are probably going to tell you the same thing. Here is a link for cleaning the grill, it was actually a restore that I did.
 
To clarify, the application for US Patent 3,538,906 was filed in November 1968, and the patent was issued in November 1970. I have seen a few pictures of lid vents stamped not with the patent number, but "Pat. Pending." I expect that these lids were manufactured during the 1968 - 1970 time period (i.e., after the application was filed, but before the patent was issued).

It's a safe bet that any lids stamped with the patent number were manufactured after the patent issued.

Based on the lower case lettering of the word "weber" across the center the lid vent, I would guess that your kettle was manufactured in the mid- to late-seventies, as I believe that lid vents from earlier in that decade were stamped "Bar B Q Kettle."
 
Congrats Willie! That is a nice Brownie! and Kevin is spot on, that Kettle is mid to late 70's. If it where early 70's it would also have the Earlier style wheels as the one in the 1973 Catalog
 
Well guys i got an email from Krystin @ Weber and she believes this kettle is either a '64 or '65 and that it's nickname is "The Warrior".

So there ya' go!
 
Willie, In my experience I wouldnt put a whole lot of stock into the email response from weber about the year of your grill. Yes, they can be right but they have been wrong too. The year guess from the majority on this board is a better estimate IMHO. Just food for thought!
