I went to St. Louis for a ball game Friday night. Thursday I asked Bob Correll about shopping spots I should hit before I headed home. He pointed me to G&W Sausage http://www.gwsausage.com/
First, you have to love a meat market where as you walk through the door they apologize for the wait and ask you if you want a free beer, as they assume the answer and put an ice cold can of Busch in your hand. The case is dominated by German sausage varieties, but there's also Andouille, Italian Salsiccia, Kolbassa, Chorizo and more. I've been in search of an epic hot dog, and I am pretty sure I've found it. I don't believe them when they say they're 4 to the pound...they look much larger. They're bigger than most brats, have natural casings with a perfect snap and the seasoning is really good. If you're feeding kids, and don't want to overwhelm them with the size of these monster dogs (Frankfurters in their nomenclature), they stuff the same 90/10 pork/beef mixture into smaller casings, yielding a "normal" size dog they call "Weiners". They have just recently added a skinless all beef dog to their line up...I'll let you know what I think of it, but I think the snap of a really good skin is part of what makes the authentic hot dog eating experience special.
I bought a wide sample of sausages to test the waters. If the rest of them are as good as the Franks, I am going to be very happy.
They're located just south of I-44 on Kingshighway, about 5 miles from the Arch and Busch Stadium, right on the east edge of the Hill. Unbelievably nice people. Old school preparation. If you're driving through St. Louis and have a cooler, I highly encourage you to stop in, have a beer and pick up some links.
