was going to equip my new 22.5 wms with the genie universal garage door handles as recommended in numerous posts. the holes in the handles, however, do not come close to aligning with the grate-holder holes in the wsm -- off by about an inch. bending the handles to straighten them made the holes align but this caused the gap between the exterior of the wsm and the handle to narrow so that fitting my fingers around the handle was barely possible. any other ideas except perhaps to drill holes in the wsm that will align correctly with the holes in the handles? also, are there any precautions to take before attempting to drill holes in the wsm. will the porcelain coating chip badly during the process? thanks.

Dave, how about putting some washers between the mid section and the handles, or cut out some spacers to widen the gap. If you are going to drill new holes make sure you have tape where you are going to drill to prevent porcelain from cracking or chipping, good luck.

Why would you need longer bolts?
I believe they are like 5/8", which should be long enuff for that mod.
If not, and you need longer ones, go the SS route.
I'm just fixin to replace all my Nuts & Bolts on my 08 with SS ones after one more mod.

my reply to you regarding the longer bolts was meant for another responder who suggested using spacers to widen the gap. sorry for the mix-up. are your handles installed on each grate holder (4) or just on the two front ones? i could see only two in the pix. if just on the front ones, that seems like lifting could be a chore. finally, and i know this would not be practical with the stanley handles, but might drilling new holes and installing handles horizontally ease lifting? just a thought...

It's not mine and I believe he installed 4 handles.

I made my own horizontal brackets to use the Weber handles on my WSM
