i actually looked into having that whole grill fabricated and replicated

I have one and it will fix the rusted socket problem, but you will now get rust where you attach the legs to the side of the bowl. The original bowls were aluminum and didn't rust. Let's have a look at what you are dealing with.

What if, instead of attaching the replica style leg ring to the bowl, you used some High Temp silicone to make a sort of gasket on the leg ring. I think the soft silicone would provide enough traction to hold the bowl in place without having to drill new holes.
 
I was actually thinking of fabricating the ring stand and not actually attaching the bowl to it. Rather, I would put high-temp gasket material on the inside of the ring to prevent scratching and to even out the fit since getting a good fit with a ring of that size is tricky. If shifting of the bowl is an issue, small tabs can be welded or bolted to the outside of the top ring to secure the top edge of the bowl.
