Meat Supply - Chicago (and elswhere :-)

I've done some looking through discussions here and didn't see a lot of info. on this topic. I'm not sure this is the right area for this topic to be posted but here goes:

Particularly to those members here from the Chicago area (I live in Bolingbrook), where is a good place to buy meat? I find that the Jewel's, Dominik's, etc., even local grocery stores, are pretty much high/over priced IMO. Local Butcher shops are VERY few and far between, but I've also found them to be high priced as well. I have been going to Peoria Meat Market and I've not found anywhere that beats there prices (incredible). The down side is that they are in the city and their hours make it very difficult for me to get there based on my work and travel schedule. I'm also in the hunt for a good fishmonger.

To all the other members here, If you know of good reputable places online, I'm also interested in those as well as your thoughts on this subject.

I use Sam's Club for most of my BBQ meat. I have also had good luck with some of the holiday brisket sales ($0.99/lb whole packer briskets).

Well, good to hear from another Chicagoan. I actually grew up in "the Brook" as we used to call Bolingbrook back in the 80's {as opposed to "the 'Ville'"}.

My brother still lives in "the 'Ville' and says he likes the Meier over by Clow for meat.

But I am a Costco fan. I find their meat to be superior, and worth the price of an annual membership just for the meat. Everything else they sell is a bonus. Large cuts of meat are vaccuum sealed. Chicken cuts are available in large packages - but each package is pre-divided into smaller vaccuum sealed packs. So when you but 6lbs of chicken at a time, it is really six 1pound packages connected together. They have very good selection and carry every meat I am interested in: Pork, beef, chicken, lamb, fish, ham, turkey, etc. Yesterday, they even had bison steaks, although they were sold frozen.

Dominicks meat is dicey unless you are paying for the upgraded Angus stuff, and then it is expensive. Jewel isn't much better.

It has been a while since I have been a Sam's Club member. I used to like it. I would choose one or the other Sam's or Costco since I find them pretty similar. There just isn't a Sams within about 10 miles of my house, but there are 2 Costcos. So I am a Costco guy. Not sure where a Costco is down there- Naperville is prolly the closest.

I very rarely buy any of our meat from Jewel or Dominick's, as I find the quality to be pretty poor.

I buy the majority of our meat at Fresh Farms in Niles (great quality and prices) or Costco.

Edit: I used to have good luck at the Caputo's in Elmwood Park when I used to be in that area frequently. Might check to see if there is one near you.

I belong to Sam's and Costco and prefer Costco for everything but fresh seafood. We have a Sunset supermarket that has great seafood. If you have a Fresh Market near you they have great beef, chicken and pork but Costco would be my 1st choice.

I live on the northwest side of the city and I get all of my stuff either at Costco or Chicago Meat Market on Cicero. Since you're in the 'burbs, I would guess that Costco/Sams would work the best for you. Costco's meat is outstanding quality and at a good price.

a local chinese supermarket has pork butt on sale this week for $0.66/lb

oh ya... not in the windy city. sorry. i was just really excited when i saw the flyer.

I stock up on my back ribs from Dominick's when they're on sale for $3.49/lb. They're actually on sale this week. I like them because they taste great and they're individually vacuum sealed, which makes it easy to freeze for a later time.

I get my pork products from Peoria Packing in the West Loop.

I find the Costco chicken wings to be too large for my liking, although I like how they portion them into 1lb packages. I really enjoy their beef selection. I'll usually purchase an entire loin to either wet-age or dry-age.

If you have a Restaurant Depot near you, that place has a huge selection of all meats. You might need to purchase it in bulk though.

For anyone in the western suburbs there is only one place to go... Reams Meat Market in Elburn. I know it is far west but you will absolutely fall over when you see this place. They have everything and specialize in shop made sausage.

Stop complaining about the distance and do yourself a favor. You will thank me.

Michael - I like Peoria Packing as well! Awesome prices and the ribs I got from them were absolutely phenomenal.

Dave - Where is this place Elburn??? I would very much like to go and check it out. What are their hours, etc.???

downtown Elburn is about 1 mile south of the intersection of Routes 38 & 47. It is far. But it is absolutely incredible. here is a link to their site. Just from the website, you will get a good idea of what is going on out there.
