Maverick ET72 decent or junk?

I just received the Maverick ET72 as a gift and am excited to use it . . . that is until I read the reviews on Amazon which were all pretty much one stars. So I am going to ignore the Amazon reviews and ask all your opinions here at Virtual Weber whether this unit is a decent Weber smoker thermometer gauge, or is it junk and I am wasting my time putting batteries into it for use this weekend?

Thanks for your thoughts on this . . .

I've had mine for two years and truly depend on it. It makes life simpler so that's good. I purchased the 6 foot long probes for it and just had one go belly up. That said, I still recommend the unit. Good Luck and let us know what you decide.

I've had an ET-73 for years. Like Rolf, I've also had a probe go out but it was my fault. I replaced with longer high temp probes. I have yet to cook without it. Would I prefer it be wifi or Bluetooth - sure. ...but until it breaks I'll keep using it.

I've had mine for four years and it does what I expect out of it.
Read the reviews on this board and most have a love-hate relationship with that unit.
Depends if you got a good one or a bad one.:)

I've only been using mine a couple months now but so far I love it. Mine syncs up easily and so far I've yet to lose the signal between the transmitter and receiver during a cook. I was just reading another post where another member here is tired of dealing with the probes going bad, which is definitely a concern, but so far I'm a big fan. Hopefully my luck with this unit holds out as it is an essential part of my smoking arsenal.

After reading about the probes failing without notice I'm going to pick up a spare set so I'm not stuck in the middle of a cook without a functioning probe...

I'm pretty much a newbee compared to some of the grizzled vets of BBQ here. I bought mine to help me watch my temps on my new WSM 22, it works great. I can be in the house, watching sports while the meat candy machine chugs along. Needless to say, I like it. :)

I could be wrong but I believe most of the posters above are referencing the ET-73 or ET-732 but it looks like you are asking about the ET 72.

I have the 73 & 732, both of which are great but I can't speak about the 72, sorry. Just wanted to point out the difference but it sounds like you already have it so I say give it a try and see what you think!

Good luck

I've had three ET-73's and four ET-732's, and I haven't had any problems at all with the exception of one dead unit of ET-732. Amazon promptly sent another, and I've had no troubles ever since. Love 'em, and I wouldn't trade for them. In comps, and really even in daily cooks, I'd be dead without them. While I go on feel to check for doneness on everything except poultry, I follow temps closely to determine when I need to start being alert. It just kinda keeps me from hovering, ya know?

I truly don't think you'll be disappointed, but the good thing is that they rarely have problems later. You'll likely know immediately whether or not you got a good one.

As for reviews on Amazon, you should look at more than just the bad reviews. Look at the specifics of the review and also the percentages of good to bad. I have bought many products on Amazon that did not have the best reviews but the purchase turned out great. Take what is said with a grain of salt. Also, you are better of talking to the guys here. They will be able to give you a better idea of a product. Good luck with the unit and give it a fair test.

I've used one a few times and am trying to like it. I don't. My biggest complaint is the slowness in measuring the meat probe temperature. Watching the temperature climb is like watching maple syrup flow in winter. My go to thermometer is an instant read dial thermometer. That seems to serve me well.
