I start my first smoke in a few hours and was wondering where the grill probe should be mounted. It comes with a grate mount. Is that best and should the probe be above or below the food grate? Thanks for your help!

Maverick 732 Grill Probe Position?

I'm in the same boat as you. If I understand it correctly, the clip that came with it is used with the smaller probe for the "barbecue" input on the transmitter. The way that the clip is designed, it would be my best guess to put it on top of the grate next to the food.
I'm planing a smoke either tomorrow or Sunday and that is what I'm going to do. Good luck!

I usually put mine below the grate in the center since thats where the food is. I put it below so the food can sit right in the middle of the grate without the clip getting in the way. But even if you chose to put it above the grate - the difference between above or below is only a couple of inches. So I don't think it would make a difference in your readings. I think you're good either way - just a matter of personal preference.

Just make sure you keep the pit (barbeque) probe away from the sides since the heat rises, also not real close to the meat since that will make it a tad cooler. Ideally, I bought an alligator clip at Radio Shack and clip the pit probe onto a bamboo skewer thats sticking in the meat I'm cooking. Keep the probe at least 3 inches from the meat and sides.

I put a spring loaded clothes pin on the end of my temp probe closest to the cord, and let the probe hang through the top vent, with the pin holding it. I know the heat coming through the vent hole is probably higher than that on the meat, but it is steady, and I can figure that the temp is probably 10 degrees cooler on the meat. It hasn't let me down yet.

Make sure you don't put it where meat juices can drip on it unless you like to watch wildly fluctuating temps!
I try to get mine in the vicinity of the top grate because I figure I've got the top of the lid covered by the built in thermometer. All of the suggestions above can work. Just choose one and go with it. You will eventually learn how that reading is reflected in your results.
