Lost cause?

Restoring a 2005/2006 Genesis Silver B. These grates are about 7 years old, second set for this grill, purchased from Weber. I'm scraping and cleaning, but there is build up and signs of rust. Lost cause?

Hi Jim, if the welds are broken maybe time for some new ones. Otherwise they look like there is more life in them.
Welds are good. I'm getting some areas clean, but there'll be pitting. Hoping to get rid of as much rust as I can to keep it from coming back.

Those old grates were 304SS. If the welds are good I don't think I'd replace them unless you want the heavy 3/8" rod type ones. Otherwise that is not rust. SS takes on a "patina" I'd leave them be
Thanks. Welds are good. I'm wanting higher grade stainless, but haven't found the right one.

I agree, and usually clean my stamped stainless over a hot grill. Try rubbing screaming hot grills with half an onion and a dab of oil. Use tongs and the onion will clean and season.

Finished for today. I've got lots more work to do on the Genesis. I appreciate all the pointers!

Swap the grids periodically. Left right from back. They tend to develop a wear circle in the center of the grill where most of the meat gets cooked
Thanks. I also let the gunk build up on the rim, so the edges were having some trouble.

What are you trying to achieve. They're used grates. They'll never shine again. Time to get over that and cook steaks. BTW do NOT use a powered wire wheel on that type grate You will break it for sure. The welds are delicate
Just wanting to avoid rust. Have had the grill for 16 years, and my second or third time to refurbish. I've replaced the grates before. This time I'll only replace with a higher gauge, although one of the posters said Weber grates are the highest quality. I like where the grates ended up today.

Next is the drip tray. It's original, and in good shape, but a little rust on the drip pan holder.

Then, back to the chamber. I've got some work to do there.

They're 304SS there is no rust. I have 2 exact sets of those grates. Both brand new. (I don't even know how I got them but that's another story :D) Anyway I've used that type extensively and they don't rust. They will discolor but never rust

If the welds break you can reweld them with just a small spot weld from a flux core welder. clean off the residue from the welding process and you are good to go again.

Exactly. This ss grate is good and thick. In Canada you can only buy weber with this grate from bbq stores. Big box stores only sell cast iron that can rust or very thin ss grate that does not retain heat that great. I have them from 2008 and they took a beating and never rust.
