Lid hold down on an 18.5" ots converted to portable

Some guys were talking about shortening the legs on an ots to make it portable and someone else suggested contacting Weber to get the "lid hold down" parts from an sjp and putting them on the ots. IIRC Weber said it wouldn't work but I don't remember an explanation. Has anyone tried it? How'd it work?

Lots of discussion on this around here. It would be a lot of work but it has been done. I just used 8 inch galvanized pipe for my legs and am happy with it. I just use bungee straps to hold the lid on when it traveling. To me 8 in. pipe is a nice height. You dont have to bend down too far and the lid will still hang from the kettle bottom and not touch the the ground.

Yep, I did it here and love it. In order to get the parts from weber I had to tell them that I needed some replacement parts for my SJP though.
