Kingsford Comp Briquettes - ok for MM?

First post - love the info on this board!!!

I've got an overnight pork shoulder cook tonight on the WSM. I've done them several times and know the routine. I use the minion method as prescribed. My wife picked up the k comp charcoal at Costco. Should I approach the overnight we any different with these k comp briquettes?

I've read they burn hotter (faster?) and put off a different smoke. I've got three 9 lb'ers going on after work and I just don't want to screw anything up for this party I'm cooking for because of different charcoal. I've always done Ok with the blue bag stuff.

Thanks!

Competition King. is supposed to burn a little hotter, more stable. I have found it burns the same but is allot cleaner, very little ash leftover. As for burning hotter, I think it's the same as Blue. I prefer it over Blue.

Can you post a pic of the competition bag? I have 250 lbs of K Blue, but I haven't seen the competition bags. Thanks!

I've been using K Comp pretty regularly for the past month and it's worked just fine for me. Have done two 13 hour smokes with it, and haven't had to add extra fuel either time.

This is what the K Comp bags look like that I picked up from Costco last week:

When I have purchased single bags from Meijer they look slightly different, although with the same general color scheme.

Didn't see it mentioned in this thread, but it's on sale again at Costco for $16.69 for the 36 lbs. bags.

That's the K comp that I bought at costco. Everything turned out fine with the cook. I will use it again. Less ash. I do believe it burned hotter than blue bag. I ran closer to 250 for much of the cook and had to replenish the water pan more frequently. I didn't get up when I should have and temp spiked to 275. The 3 butts were up to 195 / 200 in 12 hrs. I've never cooked them that fast. Usually I'm at around 14-16 hrs at 225. It was all good in the end though...seems pork is fairly resilient. This was the Chris Lilly injection recipe with apple wood chunks. Great flavor!!! Learn something new every cook it seems....love the WSM!!!!!

I do need a better thermometer/temp monitoring system so I don't have to get out of bed. I still just have the wine bottle cork/weber thermometer in one of the lid vents. Not good at getting up in the night after a long work week it seems....

Oh and thank God my 4yr old son woke me up at 5am because an owl was hooting outside his window. I think he an the owl both saved this cook!!!
