Kettle Pizza - Mixed Reviews

Hi Guys

I am undecided on whether to get the Kettle Pizza. I have seen some awesome pizza pics on this forum, and was about to order the KettlePizza Deluxe USA KPDU-22 - Pizza Oven Kit for 18.5 and 22.5 Inch Kettle Grills that includes the Pizza Stone and Aluminum Peel

However after scanning their website a bit more, I came across the reviews by Serious Eats, and Sweet Phi. Serious Eats apparently wrote like 3 reviews, where they had to make modifications to the Kettle Pizza before they got good pies. The kit is pretty expensive if it doesnt work well out of the box. Eventually Kettle Pizza seems to have released a 400 usd kit after listening to Serious Eats. Thats a lot of money for a grill attachment. Sweet PHi seems to have reviewed this 400 USD kit.

I'm a little concerned that the reviews Kettle Pizza directs their readers to says that the kit doesnt work out of the box. Its a great way to upsell their products i guess, but I am not sure.

Has anyone here used their basic kit with good results? Is it true that the basic kit will cook the bottom of your pie before the top (according to serious eats) since there is too much air on top of the pie and heat escapes?

I am not handy with tools but considered getting a nearby metal shop to fabricate one for me. However, as I am not confident that i can find clean food grade drums to cut and turn into a kettle pizza.

Thanks Carlo:blackkettle:

Hi Carlo, welcome to the site. I have a Kettle Pizza from way back, just the basic model and I love it. During the summer we use it at least twice a month to have "pizza parties", where we make the dough and roll it out, then everyone puts on their own toppings and I cook them. I have no problem maintaining a 700-800 degree temp for up to an hour following their instructions. We love it. I have a video on youtube of the first time that I used it, and you can see how that turned out. I have got a lot better at it. If you search for Kettle Pizza on youtube you can see my video. TSPIN818 is my user name.

Hi Tom, I really enjoyed the video. Thank you for pointing it out to me! Boy did that cook out look fun! and it did look like it was not a problem to keep the temps up.

Ok I am sold. Thanks Tom!!!

It took a while to get my setup "perfect" but a simple KP, with a cast iron plow disk for the lid and a good pizza stone, and I make fantastic pizzas

Some earlier versions, pizzas were great

This made some great pizzas, just using a standard Kettle lid on my WSM
