Kansas City BBQ Restaurant Recommendation

We will be attending the Irish Fest in KC at the end of August. We are staying at the Sheraton Crown Center. Can anyone make some BBQ restaurant recommendations for me? Jack Stack is close by the hotel, but it seems like a fancy restaurant. I want real KC BBQ without a ton of bells and whistles. Is Arthur Bryant's the best choice? It looks like it is about 1.8 miles which is a bit of a hike for my little ones.

Hi Patrick,

I grew up in Kansas City and attended UMKC (University of Missouri - K.C.). I also must admit that I haven’t lived there since 1995, having said that, my favorites have always been Arthur Bryant's (I believe it is/was on 8th & Brooklyn), and Gates - earlier location (14th & Brooklyn). I recommend both. They have different BBQ sauces and the meat flavors are very distinct. Hope this helps.

Cant go wrong with Arthur Bryants. You'll also want to check out Oklahoma Joes as well but be prepared to wait in line (you can always get carryout which bypasses that). Jack Stack is ok but Id roll with ABs or Okie Joes before there. Gates is popular too, but it's not very high on my list either, but they do yell at you at the door which is kind of funny and catches you off guard....

Go to the Original Oklahoma Joe's in the gas station. OK Joe's has been on many of the "Places to eat before you die" lists, just won Best Ribs in the US from USA Today, has won many other awards and has stayed true to BBQ. The Z-man sandwich is a KC Favorite.

I went to the original Arthur Bryant's about a month ago for the 1st time. It was the worst BBQ I've ever had (including multiple co-workers that were with me for a business trip to KC). The pulled pork, brisket, and ribs were the driest we've ever had and the service sucked. There was some huge women seating people that was very rude and reminded me of the Seinfeld episode of the soup Nazi. I'll never go back. I think it's possible that it was great in the past but no longer. We also went to Oklahoma Joe's at 119th and Strangline? and it was the best BBQ that we've ever had. I had the pulled pork, brisket, and ribs and we had to go back for dinner after lunch the same day it was so good! They also have great beans and rice and the best Texas Toast that I've ever had. I think about OK Joe's almost every day it was soooo good!!!!

The original Oklahoma Joes is at a gas station on 47th avenue in KCK. I think the strangeline one is in olathe. Next time you are in the area go to the original one. Nothing like getting some of the best bbq on the planet that sits in the middle of a sinclair gas station. It's worth the trip trust me
