Just Wondering ...

I'm sure if I looked hard enough I'd find my answer.
I've cooked for 3 or 4 years on a 18 1/2" WSM.
I'll do my 1st cook on my new 22 1/2"r on Sunday. I'm thinking beer can chicken and probably some rib tips.
What kind of performance differences can I expect?

Larry,

Welcome to the board. I can't really answer your question since I don't have a 22, but you might be able to find answers to this and many other questions over in this subforum. Or just try the search function at the top.

Good luck !

For the most part everything will be the same except fuel consumption. That will be increase some. Also check the stock term that came with the 22 to see if it is accurate if you will be depending on it. Some have found them to be off by large amounts. Good luck with the cook.

I have both and the biggest difference is the fuel consumption. Takes a lot more to heat the 22" so unless you really need the space stick with the 18". The other thing is that it seems to me like the vent holes in the lower section get plugged up with ash more on the 22 than with the 18 which can cause your temps to drop so keep and eye on them and have a rod close by to clear out the vent holes if you need to.

Figured I'd use more fuel and that's not a problem for me - I Minioned about 2/3 of a ring and lit with about 2/3 of a chimney of Royal Oak lump. Checked my thermometer and it is within +/- 5 degrees. Did not have a problem with ash in the bottom vents - I have an additional charcoal grate criss-crossed and maybe this helps.
I was suprised at how quickly the 22 1/2 came up to temp - let it run up to 300 - closed the bottom vents about half and it settled in nicely about 252 - 253 and held for the full 4 1/2 hours. My 18 1/2 likes to settle right at 250 when I do this.
All in all ... I'll continue to use my 18 1/2" for smaller cooks but I definitely like this 22 1/2"r!

I've only known a 22, I've heard it burns a lot of fuel.........but I like cooking big pieces of meat. It was definitley for me. I've never had any issues getting to or maintaining temps since I've owned it. I've been VERY pleased for sure!!
