Jealous Devil Wood Blocks at Home Depot

Not sure if our store is just late to get these or new everywhere, but saw these in the grilling section yesterday. There was Hickory, Cherry, and "Whiskey Barrel".

Anyone use these?

I know JD is a respected brand around here, but they seem odd to me being cubed up. Won't insult them and do a direct comparison to the flavored Kingsford - :) - but seems to be going for that same market, IMO.

Just checked my local HD and there are a few new JD products, but most notable is the significant price increase of the JD lump, from $20 to $27 for a 20lb bag. The 35lb bag is no longer offered at my HD, apparently, but a 10lb bag is now $18.

Amazon for the 35# bag. $39.97 delivered. I just bought 2. They arrive this week.

Other choice was Tractor Supply. I didn’t want to do the 45 mins round trip. Amazon won my order.

Yes, I did, too. The HDs in my local area sold out of JD before Thanksgiving so I ordered 1 from Amazon. I just ordered another bag ahead of the price increase. Incidentally, I just filled up the propane tanks, 16.5gal, $3.79/gal, about the same amount and the same price as 13 months prior. I got a notice from SoCalGas of a 25% - 30% price increase so I was pleasantly surprised about the price of propane.

I tried to order from my local TSC but there was some problem...I think it wouldn't arrive in time for Christmas...but like you say, it's easier to have it delivered at the same price.

@Brett-EDH @Ed P

have you noticed any difference between store bought or Amazon JD lump charcoal?

I am curious if the extra handling during shipping through Amazon affects the size of the actual lump.

Do the lumps “break down”?

Consistently large lump pieces is one of the selling points of JD, right?

I defer to @Brett-EDH on this one. This is the first bag of JD that I've tried and the first bag of lump I've had delivered. My bag was loosely contained within a box with no additional packaging and both bag and box arrived in good condition. I won't really know for certain until I get to the bottom of the bag because all of the fines are at the bottom.

EDIT: My options for JD in my area are limited...either I buy from HD at the increased price or have it delivered, either to store or to home. And JD isn't the only price increase for 2023...I see the Kirkland pellets that were $12.99/40lbs are now $20.99 online. Sam's Club pellets still show the 2022 price, for now.

This is my first Amazon order of the 35# bags. Since the size of the bags requires special handling and delivery from Amazon (not a two day delivery) I’m guessing the product will arrive without manhandling from UPS which I believe is the carrier.

Of note, some of the JD pieces I get in the bag are quite large. I’ve had to whack them down to useable size in order to get them to fit for direct cooking on the WSK.

My fingers are crossed for a good delivery. I’ll reply back once I crack these open. I usually buy JD wholesale and have to drive to the disti and hump home 350#+ of it in my suv.

Except disti now only carries the 20# sack as the 35# is restaurant pack size and they were out of stock on last inquiry. I’m sure they’ll ramp up inventory shortly as it’s almost grilling season here in CA. By March we can be back to the 70”s.

Hmm does seem odd to be blocks. Not sure what they’re going for there.

I would probably try them just to try, maybe split them even?

I had 2-day delivery by Amazon on my first order.

I think these are wood blocks intended for smoking or maybe for a stick burner. I would split them myself, but it depends on how much smoke flavor you like.

The Smoke wood I get from Smokinlicous is 2" x 2" x 3" and I ususally split into halves or thirds.
Looks like JD is getting into they're own smoke wood like Kingsford and Weber.

Okay I was just in Home Depot this morning and they had Kamado Joe Big Block 20# bags on a pallet for $29.99 and they also had Jealous Devil Chunx XL Lump 20# bags on a pallet for $26.97. First time I've noticed either one of them in HD. I gently placed three bags of JD in my basket. I might go back tomorrow...

the JD and HD deal was announced late last year. so yes, JD in HD is a new product. i'm guessing you guys are east coast as our JD HD price is $25 for 20# sack.

Yeah I agree. I’m hoping I can spring for an LSG this year….🤞

Our latest delivery was delivered by UPS and did not fare as well as our first delivery. The box looks like it's been tossed around. If you have the option to pick it up in person, that would be the way to go.

My two boxes arrived yesterday. I'll be opening up a bag hopefully this weekend. The bag sounded like it has more ash than usual (dust). Also, the bags are the paper kind, like Kingsford makes, instead of the plastic 35# bag with zippertop and handle.

Are you getting the same paper sacks? The shipping boxes were in okay condition. One sack has a puncture/hole it it, but I've had that with the plastic 35# bags too.

I might go pick up next time to do a better comparo as the store bought bags will have had less manhandling, so I hope.

I did not know that there was anything other than paper bags. I haven't opened the box yet but I assume being retail it is also paper...if not, I will report back.

Just got word that SoCalGas bills will be "shockingly high". As things go, I assume energy costs will be increasing across the board so I'm trying to lay in a good supply.
