Is turning baby backs necessary?

I just started my first WSM cook. The first glitch is that, after two hours with the rub at room temperature, when I rolled the slabs and stuck a bamboo skewer through them they wouldn't stand up well at all. They're sort of bent over and partly flat on the grate, and I had to work pretty hard just to get them to do that. I can't imaging trying to turn them over!

Comments??

Laid flat there is no real need to flip-- maybe turn around to even out cooker hot spots. Conversely, when cooking in rib racks, or likewise rolled, skewered and stood up vertically, turning over and end-for-end is typical.
